ABOUT YOUNG ECONOMIST STUDENTS' MEET
The Young Economist Students’ Meet is an initiative pioneered by the students of the Department of Economics, Jadavpur University, and is one of the biggest Economics fests in India.
It is where the economists of tomorrow come together to debate existing ideas and create new ones. We create a platform for young students to interact with their peers, professors and professionals in a collaborative and encouraging environment.
Along with several exciting, interactive and challenging competitions for school and college students to participate in, YESM also features illuminating panel discussions and guest lectures by eminent scholars, academics, and professionals.
During the event, pertinent economic and social issues relevant to India are discussed, debated, and deliberated upon. Creativity and innovation are the hallmarks of each and every edition of YESM.
YESM has been honoured by the presence of many eminent minds from academia and industry since its dawn in 2007. Among them, the most notable are:
- • Mr. Chandra Shekhar Ghosh, founder, chairman, and managing director of Bandhan, the first microfinance institution in India to be granted a banking             licence.
- • Dr. Kaushik Basu, Professor of Economics at Cornell University, former Chief Economist at the World Bank, and former Chief Economic Advisor to the                 Government of India.
- • Dr. Debraj Ray, Professor of Economics at New York University, former Professor of Economics at Stanford University, Indian Statistical Institute (ISI), Harvard University and University of Columbia, and Co-Editor of the American Economic Review.
Our objective is to focus on socioeconomic shortcomings that are pertinent globally. YESM believes that there is a solution to every problem; one has to be innovative, creative and resourceful to find it.
The students of the Department of Economics, Jadavpur University propose to organise the 17th Annual Inter-Institutional Young Economist Students' Meet on the 12th, 13th and 14th of February 2025.
The theme for this edition is:
Post pandemic, new patterns in the global economy have ushered in. The digital economy has flourished with a rise in technology and the repercussions and role of AI in financial systems and global markets are colossal. Technology and political tensions across the world have paved the way for new trade dynamics, with trade wars and countries undertaking protectionist policies that may have far reaching impacts. With rampant globalisation and industrialisation, the climate crisis has ignited discussions on sustainable development and green economy, along with UNSDGs, to aspire for social welfare and equity.
The all encompassing theme also accounts for demographic shifts and labour markets, i.e. the rising unemployment of the youth, the impacts of the geriatric population on economic growth, and the ever- relevant economics of migration and gender wage gaps. Urbanization, policy-making, public private partnerships, the economics of health and education, the rise of "smart" cities are also topics of interest.
